Sacral hiatus

A normally occurring opening at the lower end of the sacrum, exposing the vertebral canal, in the midline of the dorsal surface of the sacrum between the laminae of the fifth sacral vertebra due to failure of the laminae of the last sacral segment to coalesce; provides cannular access to the sacral epidural space for administration of anesthetics (caudal nerve blocks).
