An acute respiratory infection of the lung tissues and alveolar spaces, characterized by a collection of fluid within the lungs; caused by a variety of pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses. Nosocomial pneumonia is acquired in the healthcare setting. Ventilator-associated pneumonia is a subset of nosocomial or healthcare associated pneumonia (HAI).
